The Robert & Terri Cohn Research Building
Rush University Medical Center
1735 West Harrison St.
Chicago, IL

Description:

To advance its landmark 150-year tradition of critical arthritis, orthopedics, endocrinology and HIV/AIDS research, Rush University Medical Center wanted to improve workflow and encourage researcher interaction by consolidating its multiple laboratories into a single state-of-the-art building.

The principal challenge for Alter+Care President John Driscoll, who previously was responsible for real estate development activities at Rush, was developing space for future researchers working on undefined projects. This facility had to be so adaptable that its laboratories can be reconfigured to accommodate changing research objectives in an environment that enhances intellectual interaction with the medical center's clinical and academic functions.

The 155,700 SF nine-story building's infrastructure can support a future 10th floor and occupies a confining, 21,000 SF urban site, including laboratories that accommodate all the major teaching hospital's medical specialties. A full-service vivarium, which includes housing for species from large primates to genetically engineered mice and surgical procedure rooms, supports Rush's research activity. Animal, laboratories, research offices, mechanical and support functions are strategically placed for optimum accessibility, security and environmental control.
